Deep năm 69 trước khi Highway Star ra đời 2 năm.
Năm 71 Highway Star xuất hiện. Nó ra đời cực kì ngộ nghĩnh: khi cả ban nhạc đang đi tour lưu diễn trên chuyến xe bus, người phóng viên hỏi họ về việc sáng tác các ca khúc của nhóm, ngay tức thì Ritchie Blackmore chơi nguyên 1 đoạn riff trên hợp âm Sol trưởng lặp đi lặp lại, và ngay tiếp theo vocal của nhóm Ian Gillan xổ ra một đoạn lời hay ho gắn vào tiếp theo Ritchie. Và cứ thế. Và bài hát được biểu diễn luôn trong đêm đó. Vào năm 72 nó được phát hành trong album Machine Head. Sau này có rất nhiều ban khác cover lại nhưng chẳng ai hay bằng Deep Purple cả.
